Drawn to Faces
Friday Sketch Group
August 21 - 31
This exhibition, ‘Drawn to Faces’, features portraits by the Friday Sketch Group, which was formed at the Brisbane Street Art School in 2016. The Group gives the participating artists the opportunity to practice drawing and painting from a clothed model. The sitters come from many walks of life and age groups. They are friends, family, acquaintances, students, or random people ‘off the street’. We feel that every person provides a story, and every face is a unique challenge to draw and paint.
Each Friday the artists have fun. They produce both unfinished studies and more detailed portraits. Some of these drawings and paintings are then developed further by the artists from memory, reference photos taken during the two- hour sessions, and imagination. A range of mediums are used. They include charcoal, pastel, watercolour, colour pencil, gouache and oil paints.
Most of the artists have been tutored by Leoni Duff. The artists have attended courses and workshops run by local, interstate and overseas artists. They share the common goal of wanting to improve their art skills by painting and drawing regularly from life in a social setting. Other goals may include developing their own style, becoming more expressive, and exploring the many different ways to interpret what they see and feel about their subjects.
