Tania Glanville

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Tasmania in 1961, Tania has taught visual art in Tasmania, the ACT and in the English city of Whitehaven. She has presented her work in many solo exhibitions and known for her personal take on the landscape of Tasmania.

The insular nature of producing artworks appeals to Tania’s character and through the years she has completed commission work, continued her studies of visual art and generated artworks as a natural aspect of her daily life.

Throughout the years, Tania’s artworks have centred around themes of personal memory, and preconceptions. Her concepts have mirrored a life which she would see as conventional but which often questions the existential, playfully considering societal norms and conditions. Her works reflect unobtrusive contemplation and a deep investigation into beauty by an artist who has spent a lifetime reflecting upon its meaning.

She sees her recent works as a homage, in good faith to her visual and physical relationship with the land she lives on. “In creating the work, I both rejoice in the strength of traditional owners, the Trawoolaway people and ache for the cruel losses they have suffered. I’m still working on what it means to be Australian and to exist in a space which I have essentially appropriated. I see this as a shared endeavour and one which must be faced by us all in order to ultimately connect with and care for this land. As time moves forward, connections are created with the quietude of this natural world and its history.  Smell the air, feel the foliage brushing against legs, hear the crunching bush detritus as together we enter a space which has moved under our feet for centuries”.

Tania lives and works in Weymouth on Tasmania’s picturesque North East coast. She has been a recent finalist in both the prestigious Stanthorpe Art Prize and Tasmania’s Bay of Fires Art Prize.
