Not long after Lutrawita Tasmania relinquished its land bridge to what is now mainland Australia about 40 million years ago, powerful volcanic activity spawned iron-rich basaltic lava flows along much of its new northern coast. These flows, bubbling with gasses, hardened into the rock formations we see now.
I have tried to capture the strangeness of these formations in my sculptural work. On this shore I fire my kiln, which oddly melts local ash glazes and iron washes at the same temperature lava flowed from the earth millennia ago.
Esteemed teachers, a beloved husband Lev and a cohort of dear friends have supported me in this madness. Lev has also expertly wielded (some of) his Leica cameras to capture the mysterious landscape which inspired this exhibition.
