Holding the Cherry, the Ground, the Decision

Daria Andrews

oil on linen / 90 x 120 cm

$6,000.00

This work draws on the reclining figure from Venus and Adonis by Titian, but removes the narrative that once governed it.

In the original, Venus reaches toward a departing lover. Her body is shaped by desire and loss. Here, the gesture remains, but there is no one to pursue. No urgency. No resolution.

The raised arm holds only a cherry.

The figure is neither offering nor consuming it. She is holding herself in suspension.

The domestic interior replaces Arcadia. Two seagulls occupy the space where drama once unfolded. They observe without judgement. Nothing is being performed.

The cherry marks a point of decision: holding the cherry, holding the ground, holding the decision.

She is no longer participating in a story that was never hers to begin with.

Daria Andrews

Daria Andrews paints figures caught in mysterious, emotional moments, often naked, deformed, or fragmented, enveloped by bold colours, surrounded by imaginary creatures and mystical symbols. She builds a personal relation with her audience, inviting them into her intimate world via a captured gesture, gaze or shifting focal point. Through her art she shows the importance of personal transformation by finding her own ways of expression, self-confidence, and freedom.
