Maxine Glanger

Maxine has a small pottery studio and wood-firing kiln on the windy north coast of Lutrawita Tasmania. Here volcanic shores, iron, bracken, eucalypt and teatree inform her materials and a love of Japanese tea and sake ware inspire forms and functional ware.

Maxine rejects the notion that there is art and there is everyday life, that the two exist as a duality. Art is what happens when hands hold a beautiful cup, a random bloom is placed in a vase and a rice bowl tenderly washed and left to dry upturned on a rack. Art happens when an object is loved and used despite a chip, a crack or a stain.

Conversely everyday life  is what happens when distracted eyes and a busy mind take time to rest on a work of what might be formally described as “art”, a sculpture or painting for example, a piece whose purpose is to fix the gaze and still the heart.

Making things brings balance to Maxine’s work as a palliative care doctor.
