Tempest: Spring Beach

Tempest: Spring Beach, Orford explores the meeting point of elemental forces and the quiet traces of human presence. In this painting, the oncoming storm surges across the sky in a restless choreography of shifting light and turbulent cloud. Its movement contrasts with the steadfast solidity of the headland—an ancient mass of earth and rock that anchors the scene. The headland’s grounded strength mirrors the scattered stones along the shoreline, each shaped by time yet unmoved by the storm’s fleeting drama. Amid these natural forces lies a small but striking human imprint: a single red rubber thong. This discarded object interrupts the landscape’s purity, serving as both evidence of our presence and a subtle critique of our habit of leaving remnants behind. Through this juxtaposition, the work invites reflection on impermanence, resilience, and the delicate balance between human activity and the enduring rhythms of the natural world.
