THE meFONE COLLECTION
Jen Brown
archival quality ink on rag paper
Riding on Canberra’s light rail, as I do often, it is striking that pretty much everyone is riveted to their phones, seemingly oblivious to the world around them. Each one travels in his or her own private self-selected bubble of electronic interactions, perhaps with someone or something totally remote. This phenomenon was not happening several decades ago and I sense that it won’t be happening several decades hence, as some more advanced technology becomes dominant. This collection of black & white ‘photographic drawings’ captures a particular era, via a scene viewed as if through the windows of a train carriage, the interior of which is inhabited by seemingly docile bodies fixated on their gadgets. And, of course, all the images were captured with my own phone.
