THE PORTUGUESE COLLECTION

Over the past 3 years, I’ve spent big chunks of time living and working in Portugal. The two large blue-&-white gridded images are inspired by traditional Portuguese ‘azulejos’ (ceramic tiles) that depict scenes of everyday life from various periods through history. I choose to see street photography as a contemporary expression of this ancient art form.

Barcelos Market Day, Northern Portugal

In mid 2025 I spent 6 weeks living in the old city of Barcelos where there is a huge weekly market. A plethora of highly diverse and colourful characters sell everything from food and flowers to clothes, hardware and ceramic art.

A Vida Portuguesa, Lisboa

At a particular location in central Lisbon, there is a very beautiful old building with historic figures adorning the façade. It houses a shop called ‘A Vida Portuguesa’ that sells handmade crafts and products. I spent time observing how these figures resonated or interacted with the diverse array of contemporary passers-by – perhaps through body language, style of dress, or the way someone carried their load.
