June Hope

June Hope is a textile/mixed media artist based on Tasmania’s Central North Coast.  Her creative practice, while grounded in the ancient tradition of handmade felt is distinctly contemporary in approach. At times combining feltwork with other mixed media techniques, June’s creations are predominately unified by the colours and textures often found within the Tasmanian landscape where she lives.

June’s work is both intuitive and observational and through the process of creating her 2D and 3D work, she explores themes, concepts, emotions and memories that hold meaning for her… perhaps inviting reflection by her audiences.

June has regularly participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout Tasmania at regional and private galleries.  She is recognised in a number of prizes – both as a winner and finalist.  Over the past years, June has received several commissions and her work is held in private collections around the world.

June is also highly regarded for her unique felted wearable designs which can be found in galleries around Tasmania.

‘Felt-making is a natural coalescence of various mediums I have previously explored which includes ceramics and garment construction. There’s a kind of alchemy that occurs with the blending of natural and raw materials, water and much physical energy. It’s the tactile simplicity inherent in the making of felt which drives me to explore its possibilities as a contemporary art medium.

My creative process is entirely intuitive. As works evolve, layered arrangements of motifs, shapes, palettes, marks, patterns and textures become expressions that subtly reflect emotions, impulses and ideas that hold meaning for me.

The ambiguity of the resulting felted form and surfaces belie their medium and hold a fascination that invites deeper observation’.
