John Gibb
About the Artist: John E. Gibb
Born in Tasmania, John’s formative years were spent at Rossarden and Red Hills in sight of the Great Western Tiers, which became a source of inspiration for his early forages into painting. Following his graduation from the Tasmanian School of Art in 1975, he taught Visual Art in secondary schools for twenty years before retiring due to profound deafness. This early retirement was the catalyst that led him to ardently pursue his present passion for painting – first in watercolours, and now in acrylics. His detailed and realistic style reflects his deep love for the wide-ranging, natural beauty of the Tasmanian landscape. His quest for the ‘Tasmanian equation’ has enabled him to develop the unique and necessary skills needed to recreate the delicate textures and variations of light and colour that, in turn, contribute to the depth and vitality of his works.

‘I have an enduring passion for the natural beauty of my island home, particularly for the pristine white beaches and iconic ‘painted’ rocks found along Tasmania’s East Coast. My inspiration for this painting comes from the intense light and colour of late afternoon; from the fiery red lichen of its granite boulders and the aqua/peacock blues of its ocean which are the quintessential allurements of this place. I have sought to capture the return of the calm solitude – after the sun-seeking crowds have left – of this idyllic corner of the Bay of Fires. It is a place I often visit to refresh and revitalise my spirit.’
