In the deep shade

Sandra Jenkins

September 2025

Tasmania’s landscapes are a theatre of contrast—where piercing light meets deep, mysterious shadow. In this body of work, I explore the emotional and ecological tension held within these spaces. Each painting is an invitation to step into the cool hush of a shaded forest, or to feel the sharp brilliance of sunlit rock and grass. The oil medium allows me to push colour and tone to their extremes, capturing the drama and serenity that coexist in the Tasmanian wild.

The shadows in these works are not empty—they suggest the quiet presence of nervous native animals, hidden yet vital. These creatures, often unseen, are part of the pulse of the land. The interplay of light and dark becomes a metaphor for their fragile existence and the delicate balance of the ecosystems they inhabit.

Through strong contrasts and layered textures, I aim to evoke the sensory experience of being in these landscapes: the chill of shade on skin, the blinding clarity of sun, the rustle of movement just beyond sight. This exhibition is a celebration of Tasmania’s raw beauty and a reflection on the quiet lives that dwell within it.
