Ryllton Viney
Ryllton Viney is an Australian artist living and working in Launceston, Tasmania. He has been a practicing and exhibiting artist for over 50 years and has also been an arts educator. He works primarily in drawing, printmaking, and painting in a variety of mediums, at times extending these works into three-dimensional forms.
Ryllton is passionately enmeshed of his own Tasmanian environment, drawing on its moods and meanings through explorations of light and dark, white and black, both as experience and metaphor. He draws inspiration from the poetry of the Romantics, from Greek and Roman myths, and from his ancestral ground, the Celtic world centred on sites of long habitation and belief, particularly the stone circles of England’s West Country. Travel and residencies have deepened his appreciation of these sites, as has the study of printmaking in Cumbria and of Russian Orthodox icons.
Ryllton Viney commenced exhibiting in the 1970s. He has since participated in shows across Australia, as well as in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States of America, and has had at least 30 solo shows. He has been a finalist and commended in many awards, including the Glover Prize for Landscape.
Ryllton Viney’s work is held in galleries and institutional collections in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales, as well as in private collections across Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
