Dealing with Birds and Other Forces

Daira Andrews

April 2026

This exhibition is about women who stop doing what is expected of them.
Not through rebellion, but through small refusals, withdrawals, and quiet decisions.
The paintings show moments of pause, repair, waiting, offering, holding, leaving, and sometimes simply not appearing at all. The dramatic moment often happens elsewhere, outside the painting.
Birds appear throughout the exhibition — sometimes as companions, sometimes as interruptions, sometimes as forces that require attention. Dealing with birds becomes a way of dealing with everything else: responsibility, expectation, routine, care, and the unpredictable forces that shape a life.
These works are not about victory or defeat, but about repositioning — about stepping slightly to the side of a story that was already written.
